We walked to the Bloemenmarkt and bought some tulip bulbs in ceramic containers. We looked at flowers, cacti, and wooden shoes. Next we went to the Van Gogh Museum--beautiful, but way too crowded.
Throwback: Arrival in Amsterdam, August 2002
Left Brussels this morning -- nice train station -- no pigeons like the one in Paris -- 3 or 4 stops -- Amsterdam is strange...hectic...a little creepy...smelly...very weird.
General thoughts on the Netherlands
1. People seem to dress fairly casually, rather like Americans. They certainly do not dress up like people do in France and Italy. We saw many people wearing jeans, shorts, and khakis. 2. Bring an umbrella. And a sweater. A raincoat would be good, too. It was very hot for a couple of days in... Continue Reading →
Utrecht, 22 July 2008
For our last day in Utrecht, we decided to visit a couple of museums. It was finally a nice, sunny day, and we headed to the Dick Bruna Huis, a museum featuring the art of Dick Bruna. I had never heard of Mr. Bruna until we encountered some of his books in Nijmegen, but he is an... Continue Reading →
Utrecht, 20-21 July 2008

We quickly found our hotel, located conveniently near the train station, and decided to walk to the Museum het Catharijneconvent. Utrecht is beautiful and charming, and we greatly prefered it to Nijmegen. There are three canals... Continue Reading →

The walking actually started yesterday, and there was a big fireworks show. It started at 11:00, because it doesn't... Continue Reading →
Third weekend in Nijmegen
Rather than working in the field on Friday, we got to go to the office and do some work inside. This involved a 40-minute bike ride, which is the longest time I have ever ridden a bike consecutively. We began by sorting artifacts by type, a task that I really enjoyed since it involved putting things... Continue Reading →

Museums and Monopoly
Today I went to Nijmegen on my own to see a couple museums. My first stop was the wonderfully-named Velorama, a bicycle museum. I hadn't planned on going to this one, but the another place I wanted to visit wasn't open yet and the third museum I want to see is closed on Saturdays, so I... Continue Reading →
